Janet Peña (she/her), LGPC, BCBA

Janet is passionate about facilitating self realization and identity exploration for individuals who are experiencing life transitions. She helps you to identify traumatic conditioning and recognize which behavior patterns are serving you, and which are not so that you can begin to cultivate powerful change in your life. If you have tried a lot of things and feel stuck, Janet can help you break patterns and learn to trust your body and yourself.

Janet has lived experience navigating parenting relationships with children and teens, and can help you navigate these relationships from a place of groundedness, compassion, and grace. Whether you need support navigating family dynamics with a partner and/or blended family, or exploring your own relationship history, Janet can work with you to arrive at a place of conscious awareness and presence. If you are ready to unlearn past conditioning and are eager to do the work, Janet is the right fit for you.

With over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, Janet pulls from her experience in behavioral analysis, psychotherapy, and integrative nutrition to help you heal holistically. She treats clients as whole humans, and will approach your work together with compassion, curiosity, and full presence.

From a clinical perspective, Janet uses various evidence based techniques and strategies including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), psychedelic integration, and mindfulness techniques to provide clients from diverse backgrounds with the care they need. Janet provides psychotherapy in both English and Spanish, and welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with you on your path to healing.

Accessibility is a core value at Mind Body Wellness. Janet is not in network with any insurance companies, however, she does offer sliding scale pricing. The purpose of a sliding scale offering is to take into consideration global economic disparities, historical injustices, and varying personal circumstances. We thank you for reflecting and paying in a way that honors our work and creates access for as many people as possible. If you have questions about this or feel unsure about which rate applies to you, please connect with us and we are happy to work with you!

  • $180 Supporter Rate You're financially stable, have investments, a retirement plan or access to economic abundance or generational wealth.
  • $150 Standard Rate You’re employed / self-employed, come from generational property ownership, and/or are able to provide for your needs in a consistent way.
  • $120 Community Rate You're relatively less economically advantaged, or the standard rate is out of reach for you.
  • $90 Access Rate Other rates are not within reach. Ideally for historically marginalized populations, students, and anyone experiencing economic hardship.

We are happy to provide you with a superbill for services for potential reimbursement from your insurance company.

If you are planning to submit claims to your insurance company for reimbursement:
  1. Call your insurance company to check if you have out of network benefits, and if psychotherapy is covered out of network.
  2. Check codes 90791 (intake), 90834 (45 minutes of psychotherapy), and 90837(60 minutes of psychotherapy).
  3. Ask what the reimbursement rates are so that you're able to plan.
  4. Find out where to submit a superbill for reimbursement.
  5. Record the reference number for the conversation when checking your benefits.

Here is an example of how reimbursement can work: Let's say you're paying the standard rate of $150/session; the insurance company may have an allowable amount of $100, and may have a reimbursement rate of 70%. That would mean that you would receive $70 back. This is just an example, but hopefully it's helpful in giving you a picture of how it could work.

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. When trauma occurs, challenging memories can get stuck in the body and mind. During EMDR, your therapist will guide you through a process called bilateral stimulation, which activate both sides of the brain and body, similar to REM (what the body does during deep sleep).

EMDR can help you work through stuck memories that are trapped in the brain, such as traumatic or challenging events, and help you reorganize them and related to them differently.

  • Anyone! Children, neurodivergent individuals, people who have experienced traumatic events and don’t want to talk about it, emergency responders
  • Women, teens, college age students
  • People trying to navigate relationships impacted by past trauma
  • Folks who have experienced childhood trauma or adverse childhood events
  • Those suffering from insomnia, unresolved trauma, medical problems and medical trauma, and/or grief.
  • EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation to support the brain in getting unstuck so that the brain is able to heal itself
  • Typically, EMDR is done via thinking of a negative thought/image. Bilateral stimulation is used to help the brain get unstuck around the negative thought or memory.  Eventually, you become desensitized, and you are no longer triggered by the negative thought or event.
  • The therapist will guide you to then begin to implement positive or helpful thoughts through the use of bilateral stimulation, and the brain integrates the positive thoughts as truth.
  • After resources and support are established, 6 consecutive sessions (weeks) are recommended, however, individualized plans can be created and are encouraged.
  • Clients can stay on to continue to integrate the experience and continue ongoing therapy with Janet. Many individuals choose to split up the 6 EMDR sessions and integrate in between sessions.
